Welcome Loose Id author, Lori Toland!

Hi Lori! I think I am right in saying that you are my very first Loose Id author to visit. It's great having you here! Can you tell us a little bit about Loose Id and how you end up writing for them? Is this your first story with them?

I love discovering more about different publishers, in case you hadn't guessed, lol!

Okay, let's start the interview...

1) What is your writing routine?

I don’t have one in particular. I’ve trained myself to write anywhere. The nature of my work is to get up, get started with work and write when the mood strikes me. Sometimes that involves setting aside my day job for a half an hour but it works.

) Which author/s inspire you to write?

LJ Smith, Evangeline Anderson, Mary Calmes. There are so many more. I could go on for pages.

3) Which is your favorite romance subgenre to read? To write?

I love reading paranormal shapeshifters. I don’t think I’d ever write them (although I do really wish I could be a cat shapeshifter) but I’m finding I love the action/adventure genre in any pairing.

4) How do you deal with criticism/rejection?

I’m actually accustomed to rejection because before I was a CEO full time, I worked in sales. So rejection comes along with sales a lot. You have to hear no many times to hear a yes. And people criticize you a lot in that profession whether it’s your technique or your product. My company specializes in sales now and I still hear criticism and rejection. So in writing, it rolls off my back.

5) What do you expect from an editor?

My editors are awesome but each one is different. I’m very open to house and editing styles and I do like the extra guidance. I also tend to re-write the first three chapters of my book incessantly so I need an editor who understands that.

6) Tell me about your latest release

I’m really excited about Soul Seduction. It seems like I’ve been working on it for forever and a day.

Ashlee Bennett has her priorities straight. Fighting demons is at the top of the list until she meets her sexy neighbor, Luke Byrne. Even though he is human, she can't stop dreaming about his buff body and sexy grin, until her dreams turn to nightmares.

Her world is turned upside down when Luke follows her one night but instead of being afraid, he is only more determined to stand beside her and fight. Ashlee knows she needs to keep her distance from Luke, not just to protect her virginity but her heart as well. But Luke may be the only one who can save her from the night, and her dreams.

7) Tease us with a blurb or short excerpt

“Ash,” he said gruffly, “all I think about is having you.” He moved forward as he spoke, and I stepped backward, keeping my distance until my back met a wall. I knew my control around him was shot to hell, and I couldn’t trust myself. He snaked his hand into my hair and roughly grabbed the strands. He angled my head so I couldn’t look away. If I were able to breathe, I would have hyperventilated.

“Don’t.” My plea sounded weak, and I doubted he even heard me.

“I can’t help myself,” he said and kissed me gently. It was the lightest of pressure on my lips, until he coaxed them apart. When my tongue met his, I was tentative at first, but Luke took charge and claimed my mouth.

I was strong enough to pull away, to tell him no and kick him in the nuts if he didn’t stop. But I didn’t want to. I let myself drown in his kisses. I was so wrapped up in what he was doing to me with his mouth, I barely noticed he had lifted me up and held me against the concrete wall.

He settled his hips between my legs and rocked them, pressing his cock against my clit. The only thing keeping him from fucking me was the thin barrier of our jeans. I spiraled higher, and my pussy clenched, desperate to have him inside me.

He pulled his lips away from mine, and my vision whited out. My clit pulsed faster and faster, and I accidentally banged the back of my head against the hard concrete wall as every muscle in my body tensed.

I shook from the intensity of my climax, my teeth grinding together. He leaned in and kissed me, claiming my mouth with his tongue again. Then he broke our kiss and whispered, “You are mine, Ash. Don’t doubt for a second that I will own you. All of you.”

I quivered, my lips parting, ready for more. I felt like we were frozen in time, and I would have spent forever there, memorizing his face.

8) Which is your favorite character in the book? Why?

Oh gosh. I love Luke but like always, I tend to have really stronger secondary characters. My editor liked Dr. Rose, a friend of Ashlee’s. I think my favorite is Terrence. I truly adore Terrence, Ashlee’s slayer’s mentor. He’s snarky, he’s in his early 40s. He’s very hip and quite fabulous.

9) What are you working on right now?

I’m currently working on a sequel to Soul Seduction. Hopefully by tour time, I’ll have most of it done so I can work on it with my editor. I also have an upcoming book from Loose Id tentatively titled The Long Con. I will probably start editing mid tour (because it seems that’s always how it works) and it’s m/m. I’m really excited about that one. The chemistry nearly burns my keyboard on that book.

10) Your biggest piece of advice to aspiring novelists?

Never stop writing! If you give up, you’ll never get published. I hear stories about writers who get turned down all over the place and some of their rejections stung me second hand but then they have gone on to be best sellers. Never give up.

  1. Hi Rachel, thanks for having me by!

This isn't my first story with them. My first story is called Trust In Me and it's an m/m romance novella. :)

I ended up at Loose Id because I really wanted to work with them. I think they are one of the highest caliber publishers in the biz. Sandra is a highly respected editor and I enjoy working with her! I'm thrilled to have my second novel out with them.

  2. Interesting interview again today. You mentioned previously that you are a cat person and put a cat in every book or series. Are the cats pets, feral, both or a combination of both?

  3. Hi Karen,

We've had several cats over the years since my husband and I got married. Unfortunately, our first furchild had bone cancer. I still can't mention Billy around my hubby.

Our next two are still hanging around and you'll see me talk about them often. We got them from Freecycle and they are littermates.

We also had another kitten, a feral we tamed but someone picked him up. He was so precious!
