Welcome erotic writer, Cari Silverwood...

Hi Cari! So great to have you here and be a part of your ongoing tour. Wishing you lots of success and sales. Let's get started...

1)                  Did you set any goals for 2013?

Yes, most of my writing goals are ones that I’ve figured out over the last two years. I wanted to release at least 4 books, because I know now that I’m capable of putting out books that I’m proud of within that time frame.

I also wanted to venture into the more popular niches in the romance and erotic genres. I have a real liking for capture fantasy, always have, and it seems to be something that revs me up enough for me to want to keep writing them. So with this Pierced Hearts series that Bind and Keep Me is Book 2 of, I’ve done that – broken into the dark erotic/capture fantasy genre. I was going to make this a trilogy but if I can see there is room for more Pierced Hearts stories, I will be writing them.

This year I am also, finally, going to write the second book in my historical BDSM series which began with Rough Surrender. I’m about to start research on that. Once that book has been fed into my computer, I may write the first full novel in the Cataclysm Blues series, which is post-apocalyptic PNR with demons and some nifty human/demon hybrids that are called demon-stitched or the Hellsewn.
Then there is also the fourth book in the Badass Brats series, which is on track for release in September. Those books get written fast due to sharing the load with my co-writers Sorcha Black and Leia Shaw.
Since I already have Steel Dominance, The Dom with the Perfect Brats, Take Me, Break Me out this year, I may even end up with six books out in 2013!

2)                  Who or what has been your biggest influence as a writer?

If I’m looking at erotic romance and BDSM, the answer would be Cherise Sinclair. Reading her books helped me with the way to write a good romance and also a good Dom ;)

I have to add though that Bind and Keep Me is not strictly speaking a romance – there is romance in it but it is not the main focus. The main plot revolves around abduction and the psychological and sexual drama that plays out because of that. When I write the books in the Pierced Hearts series, though I always make sure readers will find the man has good aspects to him even if he has done something immoral or illegal.

Outside of erotic romance, the writers who influenced me most were in the fantasy or science fiction genres – from Robert Heinlein to Iain M. Banks, and from Jacqueline Carey to China Mieville.

3)                  How long does it take you to write a 50,000-60,000 word manuscript?

That depends on who is pushing me sometimes. I’m an expert procrastinator. Because I had to finish off Bind and Keep Me, and yet my co-writers were yelling at me to also write my part of The Dom with the Clever Tongue, I wrote the last 50,000 words of Bind and Keep Me in about 21 days. I find I can only do that if I have the characters figured out and the major plot twists. Problems with either of those can bog down my writing for days and days. Though I am a bit of a pantser when it comes to writing, I also agree with what somebody once said about the plotting versus the write-as-you-go variety. At some stage of the book, you have to know where you are going.

At the beginning, I tend to have the characters worked out and the major plot twists, some of the main scenes will be ‘alive’ in my head, and I often have a fair idea as to the ending.
Sometimes things do change as I write if I see a really fantastic scene roll out due to something happening that I may not have expected. One thing I often do if I find a scene doesn’t play out as I originally planned is that I will keep the stub of the original scene and have the characters change direction after realizing that whatever it was they were going to do isn’t a good idea. That echoes real life. After some new feeling or fact is presented to us, we go, why the hell was I going to do that? And then we do something else that makes more sense.

To keep my writing times in perspective, my first book took three years to write and was never published. Some of the best stories of writers will pour from their fingers with ease. Perhaps that’s because the ideas in them are so good? I sure hope so!

BIND AND KEEP ME blurb
How far would you go to protect your love and your life?

When two deaths turn his world upside down, Klaus must wrestle with a problem that goes soul deep. With Jodie it was capture fantasy but now he’s made the fantasy real, dragging her along as his accomplice. No one should feel so good about something so wrong.

Maybe his soul is darker than he feared. Maybe the rules shouldn't apply to him.

Explicit Excerpt
“I’m not yours.” Her answer was quiet and tremulous.

Such bravery in the face of overwhelming superiority.

I stopped with my palm pressing her upper back down onto the mattress. Enough pressure that she could feel my strength, enough so that she tensed and then, as I didn’t relent, she gave in, her head lowering, her body quivering. Was she a true submissive? I was fairly certain she was.

“You’re pretty, beautiful even. Desirable. Fuckable. I scare you because I like pain more than you can comprehend. I’m not going to kill you. I’m not going to carve off your flesh and eat it. But, little toy, I am going to hurt you more than you think you can take.”

She froze in the middle of inhaling. I smiled and grasped a big handful of those dark locks just above her nape. I levered her head back until she was arched and her breasts were no longer concealed beneath her. So I took one in the grip of my other hand. “Mine,” I whispered. “You’re mine whether you fucking want to be or not.”
I squeezed both her breast and the fistful of hair, and I leaned down to look into her fear-darkened eyes.

“You need to learn not to be afraid of pain,” I murmured. “And you know why?”

She swallowed and I felt her endeavor to shake her head. Long strands of her hair fell across her face.

“If you lose that fear of pain, you will lose some of your fear of me. Not all, some. I’m not your nemesis, girl, I’m just going to be your master.”

Glossary of US and Australian terms
In the interests of not jerking most of my readers out of the story with some unfamiliar word usages, I opted to sometimes use the US word instead. However, since I completed the book, I’ve been told by many American readers that they’d rather I use the Aussie words.
I’m not entirely convinced. Since I think I have far more American fans than Australian, I may still be tempted in Book 3, “Make Me Yours, Forevermore”, to use some American terms. If you want to tell me otherwise, feel free to pop a comment on my facebook wall.
This example is why I hesitate:
Klaus put on his thongs and strolled out the door to take his daily walk on the beach.
US word vs Aussie
Cell phone = mobile   US term used in the story
College  = University or Uni   Australian word used
Dishcloth = tea towel   I used the US word
Flip flops = thongs   This was explained in the story
Cooler = esky   US word used with the Australian word
Popsicle = ice block   US word used
Shrimp = prawn   This was explained in the story
Spatula = egg flip   This was explained in the story, and it’s a regional Australian term that isn’t used nationwide, I think
SUV = Four wheel drive   US word used
There may be others I substituted but missed seeing. I have become so used to doing this in my stories that it’s almost automatic. I have also used US spelling throughout. Though this book is self-published both of my earlier publishers, Loose Id and Lyrical Press, used US spelling.
